Your curriculum vitae is the single most important weapon in your armoury when it comes to job hunting.
A prospective employer will often make a snap judgement the second they read it and even the most qualified people on the planet can find themselves rejected if the resume fails to come up to scratch. So how can you give yours the edge?
Avoid making it too fancy and complicated. You only have about five seconds to grab the attention – if it is too clever and unreadable it will be overlooked.
Don’t try to make jokes and never make negative comments about previous employers.
There are no set rules governing the length of your CV – this will be decided on your career history, education and achievements. If possible try to keep it to two pages but if this looks too cramped then feel free to spread it over three sheets.
Everyone has a different theory when it comes to CV design. Don’t get too bogged down over this, just make sure everything is clearly marked.
Include your career progression, education and achievements prominently so your prospective employer doesn’t have to search.
A basic format would be to start off with your contact details clearly listed at the top of the page. Follow this with a profile of yourself which should include an outline of your skills, experience and immediate career goals. You can then follow with your career history - in reverse chronological order with brief descriptions of your responsibilities and achievements. Don’t forget to include your education, IT/Software skills/knowledge and finally interests/personal details and references.
Read and re-read your CV, and then ask a friend or family member to read it too. Make sure that there are no spelling or grammatical errors – many CVs are rejected outright because of mistakes or errors.
It might sound obvious, but be truthful. Never try to smudge dates and jobs to hide periods of unemployment. The most basic of checks will expose your deceit and ruin any chance of getting a job.
Construct your credit rating back when your present credit scores are reduced. Look at a greeting ...

It was our intention to revolutionise the way recruitment was handled, and returning to its ethical roots. With the emphasis on providing a consultancy service, as opposed to a sales led function, Amber Employment Services works together as a team.
There are no targets imposed at Amber Employment Services, the priority is to provide a service of the highest standard to our clients, without the need for internal competition between consultants.
In addition to recruitment, Amber Employment Services are able to offer supporting services including free Employment Law Seminars on topical legislation or matters of interest in the workplace.
Our seminars are held on a quarterly basis and have proven to be a huge success. All who are involved within the HR or Recruitment process are welcome to join us at these popular events.
In addition to the generalist commercial office recruitment service, Amber Employment Services have a successful track record of placing more specialist vacancies. Often our clients have come to us for help finding local staff, relying upon our recruitment expertise and ability to assimilate the knowledge required to fulfil the vacancy brief.
